I totally disagree. Art needs to impact me right away. Either by it's composition or use of color or something. If I have to know art history to appreciate art then I don't want it.

When young students first look at modernist abstract painting, their eyes are assailed by a seemingly meaningless mass of squiggles. It is only after a study of the history of art and the forces which led up to abstraction that it is possible to appreciate the intellectual sophistication of modern art. Thus, a high-school study of modern art should always begin with a study of the history of art.

You make a good point. One need not be educated in modern art - or any art for that matter - in order to enjoy it.
Why cannot it be appreciated on some visceral level?
Anyone who attended the opening show of the Contemporary Art Center could never truly understand much of what was presented. After being bombarded with unconventional art - a lot of which I did not understand - I decided not to make judgment calls and appreciate the experience for what it was: A Day in the Art Fun House
